Book Review: Cravings by Chrissy Teigen

Recipes for all the food you Want to Eat
By Chrissy Teigen

Maybe she's on a photo shoot in Zanzibar. Maybe she's making people laugh on TV. But all Chrissy Teigen really wants to do is talk about dinner. Far from the cliche of the model-who-likes-burgers-for-cover-shots-and-magazine-profiles, Chrissy Teigen is a truly passionate home cook. For years, she's been collecting, cooking and Instagraming her favorite recipes, and here they are: From breakfast all day to John Legend (her musician husband) 's famous fried chicken with spicy honey butter and her mother Pepper's Thai classics. Salty, spicy, saucy and fun (that's the food but her too) these dishes are for family, for date night at home, for party time, and for a few life-sucks moments (salads). With more than 100 recipes and Chrissy's inimitable wit and stories, you'll learn the importance of chili peppers, the secret to cheesy cheeses eggs, and life tips like how to use bacon as a home fragrance, the single best way to wake up in the morning and how to to overthink men or Brussels sprouts. Because for Chrissy Teigen, cooking eating, life and love are one and the same.

Chrissy Teigen is one of my celebrity crushes. Like a lot of people I was first introduced to her through one of her husband's music videos. Since he was saying all these nice things about her in the song (and that she's gorgeous) I'd check her out. I'm glad I did too. Her Instagram feed is filled with her cute dogs, yummy looking food, and pictures of her that are often commented on as #goals (I don't disagree), Chrissy Teigen's twitter is even better, filled to the brim with her unfiltered opinions. I even remember seeing this cookbook as a work in progress on her social media, but as much as I love her I was a little wary when this book was sent to me by the publisher, because I've seen quite a few celebrity book fails.

From the moment Cravings Cook Book came in though I have been impressed. The photograph is beautiful but it feels real. I mean like the food has actually been made, unlike the all the weird photography tricks they use for advertisements, and the photos her and her family are so sweet. And from the introduction you can see that Chrissy has a real passion for food and put herself into sharing it. But about those recipes...

Starting out she talks about a few ingredient and measurement tips, and a few more throughout the book for cooking different ingredients, all of which are perfect for those new (or bad) in the kitchen. Each recipe has a serving size along with the prep and total time at the top as well as fun commentary about the food from Chrissy. While I've thus far only tried two of the recipes, Dutch Baby Pancakes, and the Armadillo Cheesy Garlic Bread (both of which were fantastic on my first attempt) all the recipes look totally doable even if you don't consider yourself domestic. Better than that though they're all real food you will want to eat, and you'll actually get a full belly from.

Cravings is a great cook book with a huge amount of variety in taste, ingredients, and occasion that's perfect for beginners. Even if you're not a Chrissy Teigen fan you'll fall in love with this cookbook and probably her too.
