DIY Woven Scrap Rug and Simple Frame

making-your-own-rug
I've been seeing a lot of woven rugs around the internets (especially on pinterest) and I decided I want to make one. Unlike the ones I've been seeing, I didn't go out and buy a bunch of fancy yarn, instead I decided to make mine out of old table clothes turned into scraps. Although when I started making it I had planned on this rug being in the kitchen, it ended up in the bathroom instead.

The first step to any rug weaving project is the frame. You can buy this, but of course for my scrap rug I made mine myself and it was actually very simple. First find two pice of wood that are roughly the length of the rug you want. Then drill holes in this with a bit large enough to make a hole that dow rods can fit into. Hammer nails into the boards, roughly one inch apart. Then insert your dow rods, cut to the length you want.
I then went to work on the scrap pieces I had cutting them in a one inch diameter. To make the base of the rug, tie the strips together and make the warp winding from top to bottom. Once this is made you're then ready to do the do the weaving. Since I'm no expert I just did a simple over one, under the next weave for the whole thing. I added in a black table cloth to the patterned white in two blocks towards then end. And that was it. Because I used thick pieces it didn't take very long, and I think most of my time went to pushing the fabric down to keep the weave tight.

To finish, I simply took it off the nails. Overall I've very happy with my finished DIY scrap rug and will probably make a few more in the future. I am however trying a few methods to keep from getting that hourglass shape this black and white one has.
