Book Review: Heartbreak Trail

Heartbreak Trail
An Andrea Carter Book
By Susan K. Marlow

With her fifteenth birthday approaching, Andrea Carter knows she can ride, rope and cut out cattle with the best of her brothers' ranch hands. And now - despite her mother's objections - she wants to test her skills. After all, hat can go wrong on a two-week cattle drive to Los Angeles? Using newspaper clippings about spirited women who bucked society's expectations she finally convinces her family to let her go along but only as Cook's helper.

And quickly discovers that her longed-for adventure is definitely not a holiday. It's a dirty, dangerous business made up of late nights, balky cattle, mosquitoes and an abrasive cowhand truing to win her attention. Though weary of dishing up the same food day after day, she grimly determines to stick it out. Then a river crossing goes wrong, and everything changes. Now is Andi's big chance to really pitch in, and to help her brothers get their cattle to market... any way she can.

Susan K. Marlow is always on the lookout for a new story, whether she's writing books, teaching writing workshops, or sharing what she's learned as a homeschooling mom. The author of the Circle C Adventures and the Circle C Beginnings, Susan enjoys relaxing on her fourteen-acre homestead in the great state of Washington.

Verdict: Previously I've read (and reviewed!) three different books written by Susan K. Marlow, Andrea Carter's Tales from Circle K Ranch, Thick as Thieves as well as River in Peril, and I loved all of them. So of course I was super excited to read Heartbreak Trail. It's a great Young Adult novel with adventure and a strong female character. A great day read and a book that would either be a good read for yourself or as a gift to a girl you know.
