Book Review: Letters From Ruby

Book by Adam Thomas
Letters from Ruby
By Adam Thomas

Not everything a young pastor needs to know can be taught in school. When the newly ordained Episcopal priest Rev. Calvin Harper arrives at an ailing parish in Victory West Virginia, he has no idea how much he still has to learn about being a priest. His inexperience soon puts distance between him and the very people who he wants to reach.

That's when Ruby Redding takes the young man under her wing. Rudy is one of those rare women who is so full of God's light that it can't help but spill onto other people around her. But even Ruby may not be able to mend the fences Calvin has started to tear down.

As one of the youngest men ever to be ordained to the Episcopal priesthood, Adam Thomas is hopeful that his emerging perspectives on God, Christianity, the Bible and the mission of God's people will add a new voice to the ongoing conversation. A self-destrobed nerd, Adam writes a blog, and knows everything about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I have a cousin that's currently going to school to become a preacher, and until reading this book I didn't really know what they meant when my family questioned where he was "going to get his experience". I never before realized how much of a struggle it can be to become a good pastor, especially one who understands. If you were interested in 21 Straight answers to questions about Prayer or Letting Go of your Limitations this would be a book to consider.
